Project Boundaries Identification: the What and the Why

The boundaries of a project generally identify what is included within project work. Project boundaries represent one of the components of the scope statement. This component is called “The Project Boundaries Identification”. It clearly defines the extent of the project scope (the scope baseline) and serves as an efficient tool for making decisions on the content of project work. In this article we talk about how to identify the project boundaries and why project boundaries identification is important for implementing a project.

Project Boundaries Statement

In terms of project implementation, the boundaries of a project are the reasonable limits of project work to determine what is included in the project and what’s not. The boundaries are defined as measurable and auditable characteristics and closely linked to project objectives. They create a holistic project perception, determine limits and exclusions of the project, and form the content of project scope in terms of expected results.

To identify and state the boundaries for a project, it is required to clearly define items that are inside and outside of project work. All this is about defining the limits and exclusions for the project. Stakeholders should review a drafted project boundaries statement to decide whether a particular product, service or requirement should be included in the project or not. The project manager uses the statement of project boundaries to set up an improvement plan and define the start and end of the improvement process.

Identifying Project Boundaries

There are several factors to be considered for identifying project boundaries. These factors are:

  • Project Goals. What is planned to achieve upon project completion? The project goals will identify the extent of project work and overall duration, so the project boundaries will be defined considering the high-level expectations of the project.
  • Key Project Phases. There are five phases defined by the project phasing process. These phases are Measure, Plan, Produce, Introduce, and Manage. The Measure phase and the Manage phase will be the limits of project work in terms of the implementation process.
  • Product Scope. The key characteristics (functions and features) of the product being produced by the project are defined in the product scope statement. Project boundaries identification will depend on stakeholder requirements to the product.
  • Group Accountability. The roles and responsibilities of the key project participants are defined in the Project Governance Chart which forms group accountability. The project boundaries will depend on group accountability – that is who takes what role to do what task or duty during the implementation process.

Why Identify Project Boundaries

Project boundaries identification helps clearly understand where the project starts and ends. It reduces supervision and the need for control while ensuring higher project performance. Having clearly stated and identified project boundaries allows managers to make a project environment in which individuals and teams are enabled to manage their own activities and tasks to produce expected results, within a defined set of responsibilities and roles.

Project boundaries identification allows improving the overall project management process and increase accountability level by redefining the principles of delegation and teamwork. When you have set up accurate boundaries for your project, groups and individuals can show higher performance and overall accountability because they clearly know what they should do within the project and what is out of their duties.

The identified project boundaries will help you with planning human resources for your project, setting up job requirements and defining team roles and responsibilities. You will gain opportunities for project improvements because individuals will recognize that their performance is based on how they manage their own part of duties in relationship to the entire group.

Project boundaries identification is critical to making the project scope statement. It allows setting up group accountability, including roles and responsibilities. If you have not identified project boundaries your teams will be unable to do their duties and carry out responsibilities, as defined in the Project Governance Chart. There will be no foundation for making delegation and controlling team performance

Developer Surgical Scalpels has announced that the PlayStation China Hero Project-sponsored tactical first-person shooter Project Boundary is now officially titled Boundary and will be released worldwide for PlayStation 4 in 2019. Xbox One and PC versions are also under consideration.

About

Initially announced as part of the China Hero Project, ​Boundary was the first title that received funding support to broaden high quality Chinese developed titles to a global market. ​Project Boundary as it was previously known is designed as a tactical shooter styled with a light MOBA design and feel to it. Developer Surgical Scalpels had also researched VR during its initial testing phase of the project but has chosen to focus on a standard PS4 version with a potential conversion to Xbox One and PC later on. Now known simply as ​Boundary, the Surgical Scalpels team aims to deliver a fast and agile tactical multiplayer shooter for PS4 fans sometime later this year.

Setting

Set in a not too distant future ​Boundary blends Science Fiction with a modern military theme. First and foremost ​Boundary is being positioned as a tactical multiplayer FPS with a focus on fast arcade inspired gameplay (light MOBA). This is a game that see’s aggressive zero gravity Interdiction missions against mercenaries, pirates and hijackers represented by a team versus team multiplayer set up.

Multiplayer

Boundary is primarily a multiplayer game, it does not have a single player story. Multiplayer gameplay is kept fast and agile with a five-versus-five team setup. Modes will include Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Facility Capture, and Orbital Purge modes, the latter of which—Facility Capture and Orbital Purge—are based around Domination and Elimination gameplay. Multiplayer matches are designed to incorporate aggressive combat and quick gameplay mechanics.

Maps & Modes

A variety of multiplayer maps are planned for ​Boundary and include a solar farm, museum, circular complex, orbital fuel station and a spacecraft debris field. Further details and a closer look at these locations will be revealed this year at Gamescom. Four multiplayer modes will be available at launch: TDM, FFA, Facility Capture, and Orbital Purge.

Weapons

Weapons are integral to ​Boundary and are all loosely based on modern tactical weaponry in use today. Specially converted for use in the harsh zero gravity of space, weapons range from astronaut tools like percussion hammers and lances to more lethal assault weapons, machine pistols, sniper rifles and rocket launches. Astronauts maneuver in space with the help of EVA packs (jetpacks) that can be modified to carry an array of countermeasures and offensive weapons providing even more ways to take out enemy combatants. Almost every aspect of a weapon can be customized, scopes, grips, barrels, magazines and stocks, this modular system allows players free reign to build a weapon specific to their liking. There are six classes players can choose from and three EVA packs to customize from light, medium, and heavy.

Combat

Ammunition loadouts can also be customized—players can diversify the lethality of a weapon by specific rounds in their main magazine. For example a weapon can be configured to fire two armor penetrating (AP) rounds, one after another to pierce the outer protective layer of spacesuits and EVA’s. Players could then inflict further damage by following their initial burst with a high-explosive (HE) round, and finish them off with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) round. This configured sequence of ammunition would repeat, AP-AP-HE-EMP, AP-AP-HE-EMP, until the magazine was depleted. Guided Rocket systems attached via external pylons on EVA packs can home in on the enemy’s electronic pulse making long range kills viable. ​Boundary has a class system for players to choose which can be further customized by the availability of different EVA loadout options which boosts their combat capability.

Boundary will feature a complex progression system that will allow players to augment their basic skill sets over time. Fire teams can comprise of a five-player squad all with different abilities and skill sets allowing for a tactical approach to combat. Bringing the right mix of offensive and defensive loadouts to multiplayer matches means that players can experiment with many different configurations.

Platforms

Boundary will launch on PlayStation 4 first, with Xbox One and PC versions tentatively lined up to follow and will be confirmed by way of announcement later in 2019. A PlayStation VR version is not currently confirmed or scheduled for development at this moment in time.

Boundary will next be shown at Gamescom in Cologne with an opportunity for press to play and experience zero gravity tactical combat and interview the team.
